What are we doing today?
1. We are writing and responding to questions about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl period
2. We are supporting our responses with textual evidence

5. We are imitating how successful writers write by analyzing sentence structure

GROUP # 1

and read the two web pages. As you read, you will do the following:

Member # 1. Briefly summarize these two pages, including what Svobida experienced in Kansas compared to what you know was happening throughout the South.
Member #2. Choose a quote or line that resonates with you and explain why it appeals to you. How does Svobida's language impact what he is saying?
Member # 3. Answer this question, "How was Lawrence Svobida physically affected by the dust storms?" Give evidence.
Member # 4. Answer this question, "How was Lawrence Svobida mentally affected by the dust storms?" Give evidence.
Member 5: Choose two sentences from the two web pages, and explain the most effective way to combine them.

and listen to this song (both halves) as you read the lyrics, you will do the following:
Member # 1: Summarize the story that is told in the lyrics covered in the first half of the song.
Member # 2. Choose a moment that resonates with you and explain why it appeals to you.
Member # 3. Summarize the story that is told in the lyrics covered in the second half of the song.
Member # 4 and #5. Compare the last two stanzas with the corresponding excerpt from The Grapes of Wrath and the commentary excerpt. Write a brief explanation of the universal "one soul" idea.

Watch the music video and listen to the song, "Keep Holding On". As you watch this video and read along to the song, you will do the following: Member # 1: Summarize the song.
Member # 2. Choose a moment in the video that resonates with you and explain why it appeals to you.
Member # 3. Use your prior knowledge to explain the universal theme in this song and how it relates to the Great Depression.

Member # 4. Choose three sentences in this song, combine them into prose sentences and explain how you have combined them.
Member # 5. Explain what you learned from this music video and support your response with evidence from the lyrics.

Watch the slide show. As you watch this slide show, you will do the following:
Member # 1: Look carefully at the second, third, and fourth pictures, which all show mothers. Using your prior knowledge and what you can infer from the expressions, write a short first-person paragraph in the voice of one of the mothers revealing her thoughts at the moment the picture was taken.
Member # 2 and #3: Look carefully at the picture that shows the two men standing in front on the grocery store.Write a short dialogue of what they might be saying to each other that reflects your prior knowledge of the Great Depression.
Member #4: After watching the video, play it again with your eyes closed. How does the music enhance and set the tone for the slide show?
Member # 5. Write at least 6 one-line comments about the pictures. Then combine them to make three sentences and explain how you have combined the sentences.

Member # 1: Today, many people buy things they can't afford using credit cards. How is this similar to what was happening prior to Black Tuesday?
Member # 2. Obviously a day can't be a color. Explain what the word "black" represents and the effectiveness of that word choice over other word choices.
Member # 3. Using your prior knowledge about capitalization as well as what is explained in the podcast, answer this question, "Why was this period called The Great Depression?"
Member # 4. There is a great example of parallelism (this..., this..., this...) of phrases with asyndeton. Write the sentence down. What is the effect of writing it that way?
Member # 5. Explain what you learned from this podcast including specific examples.
